Well-respected consultant/advisor Dr. Jean Houston is known for her work with the United Nations, the Dalai Lama, past presidents and first ladies, corporations, and government agencies. She has taught and spoken at many colleges world-wide, and she is also a past president of the Association of Humanistic Psychology.
With her husband, Dr. Robert Masters, Jean founded the Foundation for Mind Research over 40 years ago. She also founded The Mystery School over 25 years ago, where she is still a principal teacher. The Mystery School claims to teach all aspects of mystic and spiritual studies.
Some of Dr. Houstons 25 published books include Jump Time, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story, The Search for the Beloved, Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to Our Inner Life, and Women of Wisdom: Empowering the Dreams and Spirit of Women.
Jean Houston began her lifes journey differently than most children. At age 12, she had already been to over 20 schools across America. Of course, schools in the 1940-1950 era were drastically different from todays schools. Mississippi was nothing like Minnesota.
Dr. Houstons father was a comedy writer, so she had to travel quite a bit as a child. He wrote for famous comedians like Bob Hope. Jean began to realize that the fire she saw in her peers eyes one year would be extinguished when she returned to the same school years later. This made her passionate for change.
There were two instances in particular during Dr. Houstons life that would help shape the woman she was to become. The first experience came from questions like What is love? and What is the meaning of life? The reason theyre so profound is that she encountered the questions with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy (a ventriloquist and his dummy).
The attention-getter was the conversation between her father and Edgar. Everything Charlie said, because he wasnt real, came from the mind of Edgar. However, Edgar insisted that he didnt know what Charlie would say until he said it. This seemed like another reality of brilliantness.
Helen Keller was the one whose experience would equally impact Jeans life. Helen was born both blind and deaf during a time when it was thought she would never communicate. When Jean met her, Helen was a very successful woman, so she asked Helen how she could be so happy all the time. Helens response was to live each day as if it were the last because, Life and all of its moments are so full of glory.
