The role of psychics in society has a long and tumultuous history. Over 2000 years ago in Egypt, psychics or "seers" were highly regarded. They provided a valuable service and were often a permanent fixture on the Pharoah's staff, being consulted on issues both large and small. This was a great job -- as long as their recommendations were accurate. Inaccuracy could result in one's death! So much for retirement benefits!

When the major religions like Christianity, Judaism and Islam came along, life was not good for psychics. They were frequently considered to be cohorts with the Devil, and this could result in their execution, banishment or imprisonment.
At the same time, the Biblical prophets were highly revered. It would appear that the psychics may have been seen as competition to the prophets -- who did pretty much the same job but provided a theological twist to it.
At any rate, this caused psychics to keep a very low profile for centuries to come, and there's little or no data available about them until around the mid 1500's. That's when Nostradamus (1503-1566) presented his Les Propheties or "The Prophets" in 1555. In this book he is credited with predicting major world events including the world wars and the 9/11 tragedy. But even he had to do his work in secret so as not to be accused of heresy by the church.
Fast forwarding to the 1800's, psychics got a fresh toe-hold when the Spiritualism movement came along. Although extremely popular in Europe and the U.S., this too fell by the wayside as many con-artists exploited it for their own personal gain. This really gave the legitimate psychics a bad name and tarnished the public perspective of their abilities.
Finally in the 20th. century, psychics found a great pioneer in Edgar Cayce (1877-1945). He proved the legitimacy of psychic abilities by being able to psychically diagnose sicknesses and prescribe effective cures.
Edgar Cayce's work afforded psychics with a degree of social acceptance that was not seen for over 2000 years. In the 21st. century now, psychics are experiencing the highest degree of social approval in history. Celebrity psychics like James Van Praag, John Edwards and Sylvia Brown have taken the legitimacy of psychics to it's highest level ever.
But there are still the con-artists out there cashing in on the good psychic's reputations. Even so, there are literally thousands of bonafide psychics available and willing to help those in need. Private investigators and police departments have even come to recognize the legitimacy of psychics.
So finally, FINALLY psychics are moving back into the respected perception of over 2000 years ago. No more hiding, no more working in the back-alleys of society. They are finally free to do the good work of helping their fellow human beings.
